What is Environmental Management?

Environmental Management has become an urgent need as there is an alternation of environment due to the development. development is a comprehensive concept. it does not mean only growth, but it also covers the education, economic health, nutrition, organization of people as well as disciplined and honest labour. development through science and technology always involve environmental resources. and unlimited use of these, degrade the environment. thus environmental management is a prime necessity.

Environmental management includes all the technical, economic and other aspects of environment. environmental management begins with the identification of the problem to find its solution. thus, environmental management encompasses

-prevention and control measures,
-policy framing, modelling and
-environmental monitoring.

A proper environmental management strategy would aim at 'creating minimum pollution.' minimising usage of resources so as to lead to sustainable development.

For this to be successful, environmental management must include

environmental management.
-environmental science and engineering,
-economics and
-policy

Environmental science and engineering use different theoretical concepts and practical tools. these are required to monitor, prevent and control pollution.

Environmental economics deals with the cost and benefits of environmental and natural resources. environmental policy must include a set of rules and regulations made by responsible and qualified authorities for safe guarding the welfare of the society.

Need for Environmental Management.

After early man's development into agricultural societies, there was an increase in productivity. as ploughts were made, the farmers began using up grasslands as agricultural lands. population increased but fewer people were now required for cultivation. so people turned to cities for small crafts and small-scale jobs. thus the demand on environment for essential resources grew. the city, thus, become a centre of trade and commerce and in time religious and governmental activities also prospered. as exploitation of resources began it was accompanied by degra-dation, of land which eventually led to destruction of the natural environment.

Environmental problems increased due to 

environmental management.
-overgrazing,
-excessive timber cutting and
-bad agricultural practices.

some more points related to the need for environmental management are-

1. Industrial Revolution brought a major change from small-scale manufacturing by hand to large scale manufacturing by machine. this led to the development of industrial society in which manufacturing of different objects used up more and more energy resources and was less labour intensive in nature.

2. Use of machines on the farms displaced many farm labourers and led to many rural people going to the cities. the shift from an agricultural to industrial society brought a sudden and major change in the way human beings interacted with the environment. thus, interaction become more negative as it damaged the environment.

3.it is quite obvious now that environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, soil erosion, destruction of forests and wildlife, etc. are the results of ever-increasing demands of industrial societies on the environment.

4.Being a member of an industrial society with much advanced technology, we can observe an obvious rise in production, consumption, use of non-degradable synthetics and more and more usage of non- renewable resources.(environmental management)

5.there has been a large increase in energy demands, in turn causing a huge increase in problems such as pollution, resources depletion, global warming, health hazards, nuclear hazards, over population, etc.

6.The degradation of biological and physical systems is not only an environmental concern, it also has social, economic and political impacts. their impacts are apparent not only on one country but on the whole world.

7.Extensive has caused depletion of natural resources, increased pollution and caused a threat to resources being depleted.

8.Human welfare is now dependent on the optimum interection between man and his environment. advancement in technology has meant that Earth's ecosystem is suffering due to our actions as we are not aware of how it functions.

9.Nature is equipped to handle and recover from environmental damage but only to a certain limit. due to our ignorance of the fundamental laws governing the survival of populations and use of resources. the ecological balance of our biosphere is continuously being upset.(environmental management)

Human beings are dependent on a common biosphere for their sustenance, yet each one from individual to country wants to survive and prosper disregarding the effect it has on others. some communities or countries exploit earth's resources with no regard for the impact it would have on the future generations. many countries consume far too little causing hunger, squalor, disease and premature death. we have been racing blindly towards development and prosperity paying little heed to correcting the faults we have. the prosperity gained in some countries has been attained due to developed farming, forestry, industries which herald profit and progress for a very short time. there is too much interference in the natural processes in today's times and this is ever on the increase. many decisions that we take today have their effects beyond the national frontiers.(environmental management)

people need to cooperate for building a future that is more prosperous and secure. only this will bring on a new age of economic growth. an understanding of the symptoms of environmental stress and their cause identification is essential if the environmental resources are to be better managed. human development can be sustained by taking steps that are positive and progressive towards environmental protection.
